Pancha Kosha in Practice: Applying Ancient Wisdom in Yoga Therapy

Yoga Psychology, Yoga Therapy

The Pancha Kosha (Five Sheaths) model, rooted in the Taittiriya Upanishad, offers a profound lens for understanding the multidimensional nature of human health. It teaches that well-being isn’t simply the absence of symptoms—but harmony across five...

I taught Sivananda yoga for 25 years, helping some 5000 students, yet these ladies taught me how to regulate my breathing to avoid over-extending the belly; modify my posture to reduce 'Buddha-belly'; taught me how to extend the rib-cage length-wise as well as sideways (thereby eliminating pain under a lower rib); how to massage the fascia and open Vagus nerve and lymph; how to work all belly muscles, not just diaphragm; how to see layers inside my body I was not acquainted with; and even to massage the groin to increase mobility in the hip. Also to stop worrying over-much about CO2, and instead learn to use it, and N2O. A breathing workshop turned into an easy full-body adjustment, tip to toe, inside and out, completely soothing to the mind and pranamayakosha. I have much gratitude for renewed life for this nearly-70-year old.

I just took a lecture with Lana and Nadia and it was honestly one of the best lectures I've ever had. Their combination of deep knowledge and living the practices taught me so much and was so inspiring. Their understanding of the body and how to heal it clearly comes from years and years of hard work. What they offer is so valuable and so difficult to find. I'm definitely signing up for one of their longer courses. Thank you again to Lana and Nadia for all your efforts and for sharing such a variable treasure with us.

I was lucky to attend Narayani’s Inner Balance training in Kerala recently and I have only praise for their work! The training was a perfect blend of theory and practice. I came home with lots of new tools and ideas for myself and my students. Also, they are both so empathetic and kind. If you have a chance, I highly recommend working with Narayani!

Adapt. Adjust. Appreciate. Life doesn’t always gi Adapt. Adjust. Appreciate.

Life doesn’t always give us the landscape we expected.

Sometimes it takes us from familiar forests to rocky highlands, from what we know to something completely different.

Yoga is not only what happens on the mat, or how we move through a posture or regulate the breath. It is also how we meet changing circumstances.

We adapt to what has changed.
We adjust to what is here.
We stop resisting what we cannot change.
And we learn to appreciate what this new landscape has to offer.

Not because every change is easy or every reality is what we would have chosen — but because there is still life here, still beauty, still something to discover.

Perhaps this is part of a yogi’s lifestyle:
to meet reality as it is, respond wisely, and find joy in what is here

BALANCE IS MORE THAN STANDING ON ONE LEG. Balance BALANCE IS MORE THAN STANDING ON ONE LEG.

Balance depends on how your brain receives and integrates information from your feet, joints, muscles, eyes, and inner ear—then coordinates an appropriate response.

That ability to sense where your body is in space is called proprioception.

Through Yoga Therapy, we can train this system with simple, progressive movements that challenge:

• Body awareness
• Weight shifting
• Joint position sense
• Coordination
• Postural control

Balance isn’t about staying perfectly still.

It’s about how well you can sense, adapt, and respond. 🌿

FAQ

Is yoga therapy available virtually or only in person?

Yoga therapy is available both online and in person.

I offer a limited number of in-person sessions, while online sessions provide greater flexibility and accessibility.

If you prefer in-person work but no slots are currently available, you are welcome to begin online sessions in the meantime. I can also add you to the waitlist for in-person availability.

Does my private health insurance cover your services?

Y

Yes. As registered members of The RITMA Complementary Medicine Association, most yoga therapy sessions may be covered under Complementary Medicine or Naturotherapy, depending on your insurance provider.

Integrative BodyMind Therapy sessions are typically covered under the standard Massage Therapy category.

After your session, I can provide an insurance receipt to support your reimbursement claim. Please let me know at the time of your appointment if you require one.

Coverage varies between providers and plans, so I recommend checking directly with your insurance company to confirm your specific benefits.
